Hello and welcome! This site is dedicated to the Folderado file manager. The sections below touch on topics you might be wondering about if you've just stumbled across this web site...
What is Folderado?
Folderado is a modern file manager that's currently in the works for Windows. It mixes concepts from "orthodox" and "navigational" file managers, with the goal of providing fast, comfortable tools for navigating and organizing computer file systems. This includes performing common file and directory operations, such as copying, moving, searching, and deleting, as well as interacting directly with different file types, such as viewing images and other documents.
It is built from the ground up as a native application, with performance as a key priority. It also sports a fully custom GUI, allowing for new and unique ways to show and interact with content.
Why would we need another file manager?
In the same way that "Notepad" can be used to edit text files, more advanced text editing software still exists to provide users with better, faster tools to get things done. Not everyone will need an advanced file manager, but for those who do, Folderado will hopefully serve as an exciting new option. Although it's still early in development, the project aims to deliver some nifty new ways to view and interact with the file system.
Will Folderado be free to download?
The current goal is to develop Folderado into a robust, commercial application that users will find valuable enough to pay a reasonable registration fee for continued use. That said, I am not a fan of overly restrictive licenses or burdensome subscription fees. My hope is to find a middle ground that provides overwhelming value to the user while still generating enough income to justify and support its continued development.
During initial development, I intend to release free, early versions to gauge interest in the application, solicit feedback on what's useful, sort out any compatibility issues, and establish a channel for support. While the final details for monetization (as the product matures) have not been worked out yet, my current thinking is that "official" releases may be in the form of fully-featured, free downloads that have occasional alerts to encourage registration. In addition, donations or sponsorship from anyone who wishes to support this work would be greatly appreciated.
When will Folderado be Available?
Soon! The plan is to begin releasing early development versions while also documenting progress on the Development Blog. Announcements related to availability will be made very clear on this web site, so please consider subscribing via RSS or checking back often.
Who is working on Folderado?
At this time, Folderado is the work of a solo developer named Kurt. This started out as a passion project of mine-- I could not find a modern file manager that "felt right" to me, so I decided to take a swing at building one myself. My hope is that over time, others will find this application both useful and delightful, with the goal of continuing to build it out into a truly great product.
If you find this project interesting, feel free to subscribe to the RSS feed for the latest news. And if you're interested in technical details, be sure to check out the Development Blog. Welcome aboard!
